SABAK BERNAM, Sept 12 — The use of the Effective Microorganism (EM) technology could be an environmentally friendly way to help farms manage smell, flies and waste, towards a cleaner and more comfortable solution for farmers and nearby neighbourhoods.
MyBioStar owner Mohd Fesal Idris, 66, said the EM microbe blend can be used on livestock’s waste, barns and food to break down the matter and reduce the production of ammonia, which causes the bad smell.
“The microbe blend will break down dung and contain the smell. We can spray it on animal dung or mix it into livestock’s feed and water, making the dung a good compost,” he told Media Selangor on August 17.
Fesal, fondly known as Pak Faisal, said the use of MyBioStar could attract fewer flies, which are usually drawn to the stench from livestock waste, and especially benefit chicken farms and nearby neighbourhoods as the stench typically travels hundreds of metres.
He added that EM technology is safer and more practical as it is produced using natural sources.
Other than farming, the technology could also be used on plantations to ferment corn stalks, Napier grass and padi straw and produce silage, which is used in livestock feed.
Fesal said this method won’t just improve plantation waste management, but could restore ground fertility as broken-down organic matter is returned to the earth.
“It is not only able to break down ammonia but acts as a natural probiotic that strengthens animal’s immune systems and improves their digestive systems,” he explained.
He also said the EM method must be employed alongside education and consistent guidance so agriculture operators understand how to use the technology for optimal results.
Fesal added that he is ready to work with the state government to expand the use of MyBioStar and EM technology to encourage more sustainable agriculture practices.
