SHAH ALAM, Sept 11: The Ulu Yam junction at FT001 KM436.6 is set to be equipped with traffic lights to improve user safety, particularly for vehicles entering and exiting the intersection.

Kuala Kubu Bharu assemblyman Pang Sock Tao said that the project, approved by the Works Ministry with an allocation of RM400,000, is expected to be completed by October 16.

"The installation of these traffic lights is important because the junction serves as a key route for residents traveling to Rawang; Kuala Lumpur; and Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB).

"Vehicles intending to turn right towards Batang Kali and KKB must cross two lanes, thereby increasing the risk of accidents. In fact, fatal accidents have occurred at this location," she said in a Facebook post.

Pang said the project also includes cable installation, the construction of road dividers, signage, warning lines, and countdown timers.

She said the application to upgrade the junction was submitted through the Hulu Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) in 2024 following resident complaints, with a study conducted the following year.

"This application was made in response to residents' safety concerns regarding the junction, and we continued to follow up on the matter until approval was secured," Pang added.

Pang also highlighted that the project implementation cost was successfully reduced to RM350,000 through JKR Hulu Selangor's open tender process.

"This RM50,000 saving demonstrates that the open tender method allows projects to be executed at a lower cost than the approved allocation," she said.

Pang also hopes the installation of the traffic lights will reduce accident risks and improve safety for residents and road users alike.

"We hope this facility will minimise the risk of accidents and ensure that all road users can travel out and return home safely."

"The traffic lights in question are expected to become operational once installation work is completed, subject to prevailing conditions," she added.
