SHAH ALAM, Aug 2 — Upgrading works for drains and the retention pond system in Taman Seri, Batang Kali will be expedited to reduce the risk of recurring flash floods in the area.
Kuala Kubu Baharu assemblyman Pang Sock Tao said the move was taken following a flash floods incident on July 30, when the area recorded 96.7mm of rainfall within just 30 minutes.
The area typically experiences flash floods when rainfall exceeds 65mm.
“We have identified several immediate measures to be implemented, including upgrading the drains and retention ponds along Jalan Lima and Jalan Tujuh.
“Additionally, the perimeter drain in front of the Islamic cemetery, which was previously not included under KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM)’s cleaning scope, will be added to the monthly maintenance schedule to ensure regular upkeep and smooth water flow,” she told Media Selangor.
Pang said the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS) has also agreed to repair the collapsed retention pond system near the cemetery, although the structure was not built by the council.
“The decision was made following a joint inspection involving MPHS, the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) and the Public Works Department (JKR) to identify the cause of the incident and determine the appropriate solutions.”
She said the drainage system in Taman Seri, which was developed around 1980, is no longer able to cope with the current higher rainfall levels.
“Therefore, a comprehensive study should be carried out to identify the most critical areas, including the lowest points, so that upgrading works can be expedited based on priority.”
Pang added that several drainage upgrading works had been carried out in stages over the past decade, but a comprehensive study of the entire system in Taman Seri had yet to be conducted.
She said the recent incident affected six houses compared with more than 10 houses in previous flood incidents, indicating that some of the improvement works implemented earlier had helped reduce the impact of flooding.
“Drainage cleaning works have been carried out, while upgrading works will continue according to MPHS procedures once the implementation process is finalised,” she said.
