SHAH ALAM, Sept 9 — Two locations in Petaling Jaya have been chosen to host pilot projects for the Sponge City Guidelines study, said the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).

It added that the projects will be done in part of the city’s densely populated and built-up areas and in Kwasa Damansara as an area of new development.

“Both locations were chosen in the context of differing development contexts which could provide a more comprehensive perspective in producing practical guidelines for local authorities,” it said in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, MBPJ held focus group discussions (FGDs) for the Sponge City Guidelines in cooperation with the Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia) and consultants, with various agencies, local authorities and professional groups to share their expertise on urban water, drainage, landscape and green space management.

According to MBPJ, the sponge city approach is relevant in building Petlaing Jaya’s resilience as a mature city, especially in facing climate change, high-intensity rain, and flash floods.

“It is hoped that input and views obtained throughout the FGDs can be translated into guidelines that are practical and benefit local authorities in planning and controlling urban management in the future,” it added.
