PETALING JAYA, Nov 1 – The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has allocated RM10.73 million to implement flood mitigation projects at five critical locations within the city, with completion expected before April 2027.
Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohd Yazid Sairi said these projects are part of the first phase of the quick win initiative, designed to reduce the risk of flash floods, particularly during the transition into the Northeast Monsoon.
Yazid said work on these projects began in October 2026, focusing on the areas around Stall 223 in Section 51A, the PJU1A/4F underpass, and Kampung Cempaka and Kayu Ara.
“The first phase covers five critical locations, including the areas of Gerai 223/Section 51A, the PJU1A/4F underpass, and Kampung Cempaka/Kayu Ara, with an allocation of RM10.73 million.
“These projects began in October 2026, and the Council is committed to completing them before April 2027,” he said during his address at the MBPJ Council Meeting No. 10, 2026 on October 30.
He added that technical agencies are coordinating the implementation of these mitigation projects to ensure the infrastructure can withstand the risks posed by extreme weather in the long term.
“As a result of close collaboration with the State Government facilitated by a working visit on May 19 from the State Executive Councillor for Infrastructure and Agriculture, Dato’ Izham Hashim, MBPJ has realigned its technical strategies with technical agencies such as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) and the Public Works Department (JKR).
“This ensures that every implemented mitigation project is capable of long-term resilience against future extreme weather conditions,” he said.
Yazid added that MBPJ has allocated RM21 million for 15 "quick win" projects, coordinated as an immediate measure to reduce the risk of flash floods.
The remaining 10 quick win projects, with an allocation of RM10.31 million, are scheduled for implementation under the 2027 Budget, with the procurement process set to begin as early as February next year.
In total, MBPJ’s flood mitigation plan is divided into three phases: 15 quick win projects valued at RM21 million, 12 medium-term projects totalling RM19.9 million, and five long-term projects valued at RM36 million.
Since 2017, MBPJ has also spent RM62.6 million, excluding the quick win projects, to enhance the city's infrastructure capacity to withstand the impacts of climate change.
The measures include inline detention systems and mini-dams, on-site detention (OSD) systems located beneath roads, and the River Overflow Control System (SKaLiS) to manage water flow and prevent river water from entering the internal drainage network.
Furthermore, MBPJ utilises water-level sensors and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in high-risk areas to detect rising river water levels in real time, as well as to trigger early warning sirens for the public.
