SHAH ALAM, Sept 8 — Efforts to comprehensively repair Jalan Perindustrian Kapar-Meru (FT3217) are being expedited following damage involving several sunken and potholed sections of the road.
Meru assemblywoman Mariam Abdul Rashid said comprehensive action was needed as previous maintenance only involved certain sections, particularly at locations where damage had occurred.
"I have submitted an application to the Works Ministry (KKR), directly to the Secretary-General, and we are now waiting for a response to repair FT3217.
"I will continue to follow up with KKR so that, at the very least, the work can be included in the 2027 allocation or budget. We will try our best to ensure this road can be repaired," she told Media Selangor.
She said FT3217 is a Federal Route and one of the important roads connecting the Klang, Petaling and Kuala Selangor districts, and therefore carries heavy traffic, including heavy vehicles.
She said rapid development around Meru had also increased the movement of heavy vehicles such as lorries carrying soil and containers, putting further pressure on the condition of the road.
"The road used to be in good condition but due to rapid development, it has now become a main route for heavy vehicles. It is possible that the existing road specifications are unable to cope with the increasing movement of heavy vehicles.
"Previous maintenance involved several sections of the road. However, damaged areas need to be addressed immediately, especially in front of Sekolah Kebangsaan Meru and along Jalan Hamzah Alang Kapar, which often receives complaints from the public," she said.
Mariam said the section requiring comprehensive repairs was estimated to be three to four kilometres long, but the actual distance and scope of work would be determined based on a technical assessment by the relevant authorities.
She said the sunken road surface also posed a risk to road users, particularly motorcyclists, with several accidents reported along the route.
"Accidents have occurred, especially involving motorcycles. When the road sinks, riders can skid. That is why the safety and comfort of the people are the priority," she said.
In a related development, she said the Public Works Department (JKR) had also committed to addressing drainage system problems along the route, including applying for an allocation to upgrade and widen sections of drains identified as problematic.
She said water flow at several locations had been disrupted by rubbish, silt and vegetation, while there were also structures built over drains that were being used as access routes to premises.
"For the time being, JKR's commitment is to clean up the rubbish, vegetation and silt first while the upgrading application process is being carried out.
"When it rains, water can rise and overflow into residential areas. We have indeed received complaints about this, so the matter needs to be addressed," she said.
