SHAH ALAM, Nov 7 — Flooding in several parts of Meru, Klang, has eased following the implementation of the Sungai Kapar Kecil and Sungai Kapar Besar flood mitigation project, which is now 37 per cent complete.

Meru assemblywoman Mariam Abdul Rashid said the project, which began in January 2024 and is slated for completion in 2029, had shown positive results, with several flood-prone areas, including Pekan Meru, avoiding major flooding during recent heavy rain.

“The Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) director informed me that the project has reached 37 per cent completion. Based on my observations, work on the ground appears to be progressing,” she told Media Selangor.

She said several areas previously prone to frequent flooding included Jalan Cempaka, Jalan Paip, Jalan Hamzah Alang, Taman Sri Putri, Taman Mesra, Taman Berkat and Taman Meru Murni. However, no residents from these areas had to seek shelter at temporary relief centres (PPS) during the recent floods.

Mariam said the flood mitigation project also involved the construction of four retention ponds, while drain-widening works along Jalan Kenangan in Taman Meru 3 has begun to help reduce flood risks.

“The project takes time because it involves land acquisition, studies and design preparations before construction can be fully implemented.

“We want to ensure that the facilities being built are suitable and can help reduce flood risks in the long term.”

She said the retention pond in Kampung Budiman is also functioning well, while the installation of three water pumps by the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) in Taman Meru Jaya and the construction of an embankment in Aman Perdana have helped reduce flood risks and water-logging.

On preparations for the Northeast Monsoon and the high tide phenomenon, Mariam said drain and ditch maintenance works are being intensified in collaboration with Selangor JPS, the Public Works Department (JKR) and MBDK.

Preparedness information is also being disseminated to residents through village heads and councillors.

However, she said water overflow is still occurring at several locations near development areas, including Taman Datuk Bandar and areas bordering Fairy Park.

“Although the drainage system has improved, we must always remain prepared as unusually heavy rainfall and the high tide phenomenon can still cause flooding.”

She also advised residents to move their vehicles to higher ground, keep important documents and valuables in safe places, and follow disaster alerts through official government channels.
