SHAH ALAM, Sept 5 — Fifteen quick-win flood mitigation projects have been earmarked for Sabak Bernam at a cost of RM6.5 million, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.
He added that the proposal was covered during a visit to and meeting at the Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB) yesterday.
The flood mitigation plans were studied along with the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), especially to identify needs in 11 frequently flooded areas, he explained.
“Eleven at-risk areas were identified, including Kampung Nelayan Sungai Besar, Kampung Belia 2, Km33 Jalan Sungai Panjang, KDR Rimba, and several locations in Sekinchan and Sepintas,” he said in a Facebook post.
Izham also said that among the quick-win solutions are roving pumphouses and bund and breakwater reinforcements, with longer-term solutions including a RM10.22 million permanent pumphouse construction project in the Panchang Bedena irrigation area.
“The RM15 million Sungai Bernam Phase 3 Flood Mitigation Plan has also been proposed to more comprehensively address flood problems,” he added.
During the visit, Izham assessed several other infrastructure issues, including road and bridge conditions and ongoing and planned projects in the district, including the in-progress Sungai Air Tawar bridge and road construction plan and proposal for an overpass at the Sepintas intersection.
Also in focus is a proposal to upgrade Jalan B44 Sungai Panjang and Jalan B55 Pekan Sungai Air Tawar.
He said site inspections are important to ensure each issue is accurately identified so follow-up moves may be planned.
“The state government will continue to give focus to infrastructure needs and the safety of residents in Sabak Bernam,” Izham added.
