SHAH ALAM, Oct 23 — Dredging and deepening works along Sungai Klang are beginning to yield positive results, with a decline in reported flood incidents.
State infrastructure executive councillor Dato’ Izham Hashim said the project, which began two years ago, aims to improve the river's flow capacity and covers a 54km stretch.
He said the river deepening works, initially scheduled for completion within five years, could be completed earlier following the approval of several related federal government projects in the same area.
“The federal government has approved several projects along this section of the river. So, I am confident we can complete the works within another one and a half to two years. The approved projects will also complement the ongoing works,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after the opening of the Selangor Friends of Rivers (FOR) Workshop 2026 at the Selangor International Trade Centre (SITC) in Shah Alam yesterday.

Izham said the river deepening works had increased its capacity by 25 per cent, while the construction of riverbanks using Schematic Precast System (SPS) technology was among measures to improve the river's ability to accommodate higher water flows, particularly during heavy rain, to prevent flooding.
“I have already begun to see positive results, with fewer flooding problems as the river's capacity to hold more water has improved,” he said.
The dredging works were previously undertaken following excessive rubbish accumulation and silt deposits, which had reduced Sungai Klang's depth to about one metre from its original four metres.
He said the state government, through the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project managed by Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB), began dredging Sungai Klang two years ago.
In April, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said dredging works along the 54km stretch of Sungai Klang had successfully increased its capacity by 20 per cent.
