SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — Every local council in Selangor should prepare five to 10 transit housing units to accommodate families forced from their homes due to rent payment issues, said Sentosa assemblyman Gunaraj George.
During the debate session on the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today, he said this would help address housing challenges faced by vulnerable urban communities.
He added that RS-2 must translate its “no district left behind” principle into tangible improvements at the local level, especially in urban areas like Sentosa.
“Residents should see improvements in basic infrastructure and liveability, including safer roads, better drainage, reduced flooding, accessible public transport, affordable housing, better jobs, quality recreational facilities, and more responsive local council services,” he explained.
Gunaraj added that RS-2’s liveable city agenda should directly benefit urban residents through well-maintained drains, parks, sports facilities, schools, healthcare services and community spaces.
“Development should ultimately ensure Selangor remains an advanced, inclusive and harmonious state where residents, regardless of background, feel respected and protected,” he said.
He also welcomed the state government’s flood mitigation plan under RS-2, but stressed that prevention should rely solely on large-scale projects.
“We need to (improve) drains, ditches, retention ponds and local rivers with regular maintenance so they function properly during rainy seasons.”
He specifically called for improvements in Sungai Awur in Sentosa, including bank stabilisation, to increase the river’s capacity in the event of heavy rain.
On road safety, Gunaraj said government agencies and utility companies carrying out excavations should be responsible for properly restoring roads and ensuring they are safe for users.
He also urged improvements to feeder bus services, especially in connecting residential areas in Sentosa to LRT stations.
