SHAH ALAM, Sept 4 — A proposal to create a new access route for four families living along Jalan Sellathevan in Section 36 here is being studied after their existing access was closed because it encroached on the buffer zone of an underground gas pipeline.
Sentosa assemblyman Dr Gunaraj George said several possible solutions were discussed with the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), Petronas and the Land Office to help the affected residents regain access to their homes.
He said the four families had lived in the area for many years, but the access issue arose after land near the gas pipeline alignment was identified and closed for safety reasons.
“We understand that the closure was necessary for safety reasons because of the gas pipeline, but at the same time, these four families need a safe and reasonable way to enter and leave their homes.
“We will try to find a solution together with MBSA and Petronas so that this issue can be resolved appropriately, taking into account both safety and the needs of the four affected families,” he said.
Gunaraj said this after visiting the site and holding discussions with MBSA, Petronas, the Land Office and residents’ representatives recently to assess the situation on the ground.
He said one proposal being considered would involve using a stretch of about 30 metres near the gas pipeline buffer zone before the access route continues through land belonging to the residents themselves.
However, he said the proposal was still under discussion and would require further assessment and agreement from the relevant parties before it could be implemented.
“This is a positive development, and we hope the solution will provide residents with safer and more reasonable access to their homes,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gunaraj urged the affected residents to comply with Petronas’ safety requirements, particularly the ban on vehicles weighing more than 10 tonnes using the route while efforts to resolve the issue are ongoing.
He said cooperation from all parties was essential to ensure that any route used near the gas pipeline alignment did not compromise the safety of the infrastructure or nearby residents.
