PETALING JAYA, Aug 9 — A Platform Selangor (PLATS) entrepreneur has launched her own DIY satay kit to expand her products to the international market.
Norminah Shafrial, the owner of Minah Satay, said she was inspired to produce the kit as she faced many roadblocks to exporting her satay as it is meat-based.
She added that the DIY kits contain marinade mixes, retort-packed and ready-to-eat peanut sauce, and a guide on how to prepare satay.
“In Malaysia, everyone knows satay, but overseas many are more familiar with the concept of barbecue. That’s why we named it Satay BBQ Kit; so it is more well received in the international market.
“In this kit we provide a marinade mix, retort(-packed) peanut sauce and its preparation method. Customers only need to marinate chicken and cook it themselves,” she told Media Selangor after PLATS Awards Night (MAPS) here on Friday.
Also present was Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
Norminah was named Selangor Micro-Entrepreneur Main Winner at MAPS, and took home a trophy, RM5,000 in cash and RM15,000 in Selangor Madani Entrepreneur funds.
The 42-year-old said that besides streamlining her operations with the use of a point-of-sales system, PLATS also guided her on digital marketing, including producing more effective social media content.
“Thanks to trainers’ guidance, we learnt to produce more attractive content and come up with promotional strategies on TikTok. Thank God, sales have gone up around 30 per cent in seven months.
“Not only has sales at our headquarters gone up, but we also shared our strategies with licensed agents and kiosks so they benefit from better sales,” she added.
Norminah also said Minah Satay, now in its fifth year, has a factory in Damansara, a restaurant, and eight kiosks.
She explained that the factory produces between 3,000 and 5,000 satay a day depending on demand, with the peak daily output at 10,000.
She said demand for satay catering has also been encouraging, and the company is now able to give agents opportunities to manage orders.
“I know the satay market is huge. Before this, we managed most orders ourselves, but now we’re handing them over to more agents so they may also increase their incomes.
“My hope going forward is to have more agents as orders we receive sometimes exceed our fulfilment capabilities,” she added.
The third MAPS was held thanks to a strategic collaboration between the Selangor Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, and local authorities.
Organised by Yayasan MBI, MAPS saw 23 awards presented in nine categories, including innovation, digitalisation, community development, women and youth leadership, and technology usage in business.
