SHAH ALAM, Aug 8 — The state government will meet workers expected to be affected by the closure of television production operations at Panasonic AVC Networks Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Sdn Bhd next week to discuss assistance and alternative employment opportunities.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the meeting would be conducted by state executive councillor for human resources, poverty eradication, Orang Asli and minority affairs Papparaidu Veraman, together with representatives from the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), to obtain relevant information from the affected workers.
"Next week, Papparaidu will meet with the affected group to explore and offer necessary support, especially as their factory faces potential closure.
"Early intervention measures, such as providing food baskets, will certainly be carried out, but we will also assist them in finding alternative employment so they can sustain the lives they have built in this state over the years," he told the media after officiating the Selangor Mega Jobcare 2026 programme today.
Yesterday, Panasonic Malaysia Sdn Bhd said in a statement that production operations for two products would be closed, impacting 400 workers by the end of March next year.
Meanwhile, Papparaidu said that cooperation with SOCSO could enable the agency to provide financial protection and assistance to workers who lose their jobs amid the expected retrenchments.
"The most important part is SOCSO providing a form of insurance where, if they are retrenched and remain unemployed, they will receive payments in stages. It acts as a job-seeking allowance, starting at 80 per cent of their salary in the first month, 50 per cent in the second month, and subsequently 30 per cent.
"This is a new initiative by SOCSO that greatly assists people, especially Selangor residents who face retrenchment. I hope we do our best to resolve these issues," he said.
Meanwhile, the Selangor Mega Jobcare 2026 brings together 147 employers offering more than 11,000 vacancies, with 62.2 per cent offering monthly salaries exceeding RM3,000.
The career fair, organised in collaboration with MYFutureJobs for participants aged between 18 and 60, is being held at the Shah Alam Convention Centre from 9am to 5pm and concludes tomorrow.
