SHAH ALAM, Aug 4 — Approximately 14,768 individuals in Selangor were recorded as undergoing career transitions between January 1 and July 10 this year, according to data from the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), the State Legislative Assembly heard today.
State executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication Papparaidu Veraman said that more than half, or 8,336 individuals, were skilled workers, while 3,733 were semi-skilled workers, and 2,699 were low-skilled workers.
“Of the total, 3,113 individuals underwent career transitions due to workforce downsizing, followed by Voluntary Separation Schemes or early retirement (2,767), business closure (2,566), and poor work performance (1,727).
“Other factors included voluntary resignation (1,032), companies facing financial issues (532), and various other reasons,” he said in response to Sabak state assemblyman Sallehen Mukhyi on unemployment among skilled and semi-skilled workers during the question-and-answer session.
Papparaidu added that the state government, through strategic cooperation with SOCSO, continues to implement various intervention measures to help those undergoing career transitions secure new jobs.
One of the measures taken is the provision of benefits under the Employment Insurance System Act 2017, such as job search allowance, reduced income allowance, training fee assistance, and training allowances for eligible insured persons.
“Other measures include job profiling and matching sessions through the MYFutureJobs portal to identify suitable job opportunities based on individuals’ qualifications, experience, and skills, while expediting their redeployment into sectors with labour demand.
“Additionally, we offer upskilling and reskilling programmes to help workers gain new skills and increase their employability, in line with current market demand,” he said.
The councillor noted that the state government is strengthening the implementation of the JobCare Selangor, JobCare Istimewa, and Selangor Career Programme as strategic platforms to connect employers with job seekers.
On June 19, when tabling the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package Phase Two, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced a RM1.5 million allocation for the Selangor Career Programme, which prioritises workers who lost their jobs this year.
The programme, implemented in collaboration with SOCSO and companies in the retail, manufacturing and logistics sectors, targets 3,000 jobseekers statewide this year.
