State govt to provide intervention for workers affected by Panasonic closure

SHAH ALAM, July 29 — Selangor will obtain detailed information on the circumstances of approximately 400 employees of Panasonic Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. following the closure of television manufacturing operations by Panasonic AVC Networks Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (PAVCKM).

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the information would be obtained through the Social Security Organisation and the Selangor Labour Department to ensure the welfare of the affected workers continues to receive due attention.

"We will look at what interventions can be carried out...later, we will assist these over 400 workers by determining whether they can be placed in other manufacturing factories or elsewhere.

"This includes providing training if they require it, as well as entrepreneurship programmes. InsyaAllah (God willing), we will intervene and obtain information from the Employment Department or the Selangor Labour Department," he said.

Amirudin was speaking after officiating the Selangor Warriors' Day Jom Shopping Voucher Assistance Programme 2026 at the State Secretariat Building today.

Meanwhile, the Menteri Besar also invited all affected workers to attend the JobCare Selangor Roadshow Carnival, which offers a wide range of employment opportunities.

"We have a job fair where various opportunities are available, and we welcome them to attend. However, we will first assess their individual needs.

"Some may already be taking steps in that direction, while others may wish to venture into different fields," he said.

Previously, Panasonic announced that PAVCKM would cease its television manufacturing operations starting in September this year.

PAVCKM's closure will affect 400 employees by the end of March, as the company will also discontinue production of Technics-branded hi-fi audio equipment at the end of February next year.

However, it said that it will work closely with the relevant authorities, government agencies, and the Electrical Industry Workers' Union to ensure affected employees receive support, including job placement assistance and career transition services.
