SHAH ALAM, Aug 4 — The Selangor Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Secretariat has assured that the safety and security of athletes' accommodation will be protected through cooperation between the police and local authority enforcement officers.
Its chief executive officer Dato' Mohd Yazid Sairi said the police will conduct frequent patrols at all 613 locations that accommodate state contingents to ensure their safety.
Meanwhile, local authorities across the state are directly involved in maintaining security within their respective administrative areas throughout the biennial Games.
"Given the large number of accommodation sites, it would be quite difficult to station personnel at every location. Therefore, the team will increase patrols at all areas where athletes are staying.
"The local authorities also have traffic wardens and enforcement officers who can assist with security control. We are confident that many local authority personnel will come forward to help ensure safety is maintained," he told Media Selangor.
There will be no athletes' village for SUKMA 2026 in order to reduce costs. However, an accommodation subsidy of RM100 per day will be provided and channelled through the respective contingents.
State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said the Selangor police are leading the security committee throughout SUKMA 2026, particularly regarding the safety of athletes at public venues.
The police are also responsible for escorting athletes during the road cycling events to ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the competition.
"Security is indeed one of our main priorities, especially when transporting athletes to competition venues. We have requested the police's assistance.
They will monitor traffic and provide advice on the most suitable routes. If competitions are held early in the morning, the police will provide escorts to facilitate movement.
"In addition, we have stationed personnel and medical officers from the Selangor Health Department at every competition venue. If any athlete is injured or loses consciousness, treatment can be provided as quickly as possible.
"We have also stationed ambulances as a precautionary measure," he said.
Meanwhile, Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said that security arrangements are being coordinated with the state administration, as the organiser, to ensure the safety of all SUKMA athletes.
The state government, as the organiser of SUKMA, has been liaising with the Selangor police for some time regarding security assistance and control measures.
"We will ensure that the safety of athletes from other states who come to compete in Selangor is always protected and well maintained. Their safety is guaranteed," he said.
The 22nd SUKMA will feature 469 events across 37 sports in nine districts, involving 52 venues throughout the state during the Games from August 15 to August 24.
The Para SUKMA will be held from September 5 to September 14, featuring 369 events across 10 sports, including swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, tenpin bowling, lawn bowls, and archery.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam. In addition to the 15 state contingents, Brunei Darussalam will also participate in SUKMA as an invited contingent.
This year's SUKMA will be the country's second-last edition of the Games before Kelantan hosts the event in 2028. Selangor, as the host state, has set a target of winning 80 gold medals.
