KUALA LANGAT, Aug 2 — The upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 is expected to generate economic spillover for Tanjong Sepat through increased demand for accommodation, food businesses and local products.
State executive councillor for housing and culture Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said most of the homestays and hotels around the area have been booked in advance by contingents and visitors who will be attending the games.
"Homestays and accommodations in this area have been fully booked for the past one to two months. This proves that SUKMA not only benefits the sports sector, but also stimulates local economic activities," he told the media after the SUKMA 2026 Torch Run and Merdeka Run Programme at Pantai Batu Laut, here, today.
Borhan said the presence of athletes, family members and supporters is expected to increase demand for various services including accommodation, food and products from local entrepreneurs throughout the Games.
"Athletes do not come alone, they come with their parents, family members and supporters. That is why we are giving space to small entrepreneurs and small and medium industries (IKS) to market their products throughout the Games," he added.
Borhan, who is also the Tanjong Sepat state assemblyman, said the organisation of SUKMA 2026 is an added value to Pantai Batu Laut through the upgrading of facilities and infrastructure as a location for sailing competitions.
He said the improvements were not only to ensure the smooth running of the Games, but could also provide long-term benefits to the tourism sector and economy of Kuala Langat.
As the host sponsor or “bapa angkat” for the Selangor sailing team, Borhan said he will extend the fullest support to ensure the state contingent achieved the best performance in addition to helping to make the SUKMA 2026 a success.
"We have been the host before. This time when Selangor returns to host after a long time, of course the development and infrastructure in this area will also be improved," he added.
