KUALA LANGAT, May 28 — The closure of pig farms in Tanjong Sepat is in its final phase, with only 11,000 animals remaining and is expected to be fully completed soon.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato' Izham Hashim said the closure involves about 30 farms that are still operating at various stages, after the eviction order was issued, as the remaining livestock have not been mature enough to be disposed of since February.

"No new piglets are being brought in, and all will be slaughtered at the slaughterhouse in Rawang. So, the process is being carried out in stages, and we expect it to be completed soon.

"The Menteri Besar (Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari), the Agriculture and Food Security Deputy Minister (Datuk Chan Foong Hin), and I recently held a meeting.

"The transition is important to ensure that high-value agricultural activities can be carried out on the 141.6-hectare area," he told the media during the Pertubuhan Wartawan dan Jurugambar Selangor Sacrificial Ritual Programme at Surau Haji Hassan, Sijangkang today.

Izham added that a meeting will be held on June 9 to review the Federal and state governments' assistance measures, including land restoration efforts, and to help the 87 farm operators involved switch to other suitable agricultural activities after their livestock operations ceased.

Earlier, Tanjong Sepat state assemblyman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said that all pig farms in Tanjong Sepat would be fully closed by the end of June, before the enforcement phase begins on July 1.

The state government has granted six months of flexibility to the operators involved to wind up their businesses, including the sale of their livestock within that period.

The action was taken in respect of the decree of the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, who remains opposed to any pig farming activities in any district in Selangor.
