SHAH ALAM, Nov 6 — Comprehensive water flow management from upstream to downstream areas, including coordination across districts and technical agencies, must be strengthened to address the risk of recurring floods in Selangor.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said this integrated approach is essential following floods that struck several areas in the Kuala Selangor, Petaling, and Klang districts over the past several days.

The incidents involved two separate episodes, the first being the overflow of Sungai Subang in Petaling on Wednesday (November 4), which affected Kampung Melayu Subang, Merbau Sempak, and Saujana Aman.

The second episode occurred yesterday, when heavy rainfall exceeding 100mm around Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) Puncak Alam campus caused water to overflow into the Hillpark, Seri Alam and Saujana Perdana areas, impacting approximately 1,000 residences.

“Therefore, water flow management must be implemented comprehensively from upstream to downstream, with clear coordination between districts and relevant agencies,” he posted on social media today.

Earlier, Amirudin visited the UiTM Puncak Alam campus, which recorded some of the highest rainfall levels yesterday, and received a briefing from Kuala Selangor district officer Mohd Raiz Radzuan.

Also present were representatives from the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS), the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), the Fire and Rescue Department, and the Public Works Department (JKR).

In addition to the affected areas, several other locations are also being monitored, including Johan Setia, Parit Mahang, Bukit Kuching, Bukit Hijau, and Batu 7, Ijok.

He added that drainage issues linked to development projects and the West Coast Expressway (WCE), damage to embankments caused by vandalism, and recurring floods at Masjid Taufiqiah in Sungai Buloh all require specific remedial action.

The Menteri Besar also ordered inspections of two development projects covering approximately 20 acres in the vicinity of Saujana Aman following flooding incidents that affected residents' homes.

Both projects, spanning 15 acres and five acres, have been identified as contributing to increased water overflow in the area.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said the state government, in collaboration with JPS and other relevant agencies, will focus on upgrading drainage systems, constructing and raising embankments, improving water flow, and gazetting catchment areas and floodplains.

"The implementation of these measures must be well-coordinated and prioritised based on risk levels and the needs of the residents," he said.
