SHAH ALAM, July 10 — A total of 34 dengue-related deaths have been recorded this year, an increase of 78.9 per cent compared with 19 fatalities during the same period last year, the Health Ministry said.

In a statement, the ministry said Selangor recorded 21 dengue deaths as of July 9, up from five fatalities reported during the corresponding period in 2025.

“Epidemiological analysis showed that almost 63.5 per cent of overall dengue cases were concentrated in Selangor as well as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Selangor recorded 19,313 cases, an increase of 43.2 per cent.

“The Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya reported a total of 7,909 dengue cases, an increase of 83.8 per cent, and three fatalities,” it said.

The ministry said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to strengthen various prevention and control measures to curb the spread of the disease.

As of July 9, a total of 42,848 dengue cases had been reported nationwide, an increase of 34.8 per cent compared with 31,790 cases recorded during the same period in 2025.

The ministry said increases in dengue cases were also recorded in Johor, Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Sarawak, Perlis, Terengganu and Labuan.

“This situation shows that the Klang Valley remains the main hotspot for dengue transmission and requires the implementation of more intensive and integrated control measures.

“Even though several states have recorded a decline in cases compared with the same period last year, the situation should not lead to complacency.

“All states need to continue strengthening and maintaining consistent prevention and control measures because the dengue situation can change rapidly depending on epidemiological, environmental and weather factors,” it said.

The ministry added that the increase in dengue cases is in line with the disease’s epidemiological pattern, which is cyclical in nature.

“In most endemic countries, an increase in cases or major outbreaks can occur every three to five years. However, the duration of transmission and the scale of the outbreak vary according to epidemiological, environmental and local climatic conditions.

“The periodic increase in dengue cases is influenced by several factors, including changes in population immunity over time; shifts in the dominance of dengue virus serotypes; and weather conditions such as rainfall, temperature and humidity that support the reproduction and survival of Aedes mosquitoes.

“Other factors include rapid urbanisation; population movement; environmental conditions; the presence of water reservoirs; as well as the effectiveness, coverage and sustainability of vector control activities and active community involvement in eliminating Aedes breeding sites,” it said.

The ministry stressed that it would continue to strengthen dengue prevention and control efforts through a whole-of-nation approach based on the principles of Integrated Vector Management (IVM).

The approach involves strengthening disease and entomological surveillance, early detection of rising cases and outbreaks, vector control, risk communication, community empowerment, legal enforcement, and continuous monitoring of the effectiveness of interventions.

“We urge all parties, including local communities, local authorities, government agencies, educational institutions, employers, the private sector and the public, to work together to strengthen dengue prevention efforts by ensuring that the environment remains free of Aedes breeding grounds.

“Such efforts can be carried out through regular clean-up activities and by seeking early medical attention when dengue symptoms appear.

“The ministry will continue to closely monitor the dengue situation and intensify prevention and control measures to reduce transmission, prevent complications and fatalities, and protect public health,” it added.
