Rent rebate: MBSJ to absorb revenue shortfall, says impact manageable

SUBANG JAYA, June 30 — The Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) can bear the slight reduction in revenue to allow a rental rebate initiative for premises under its jurisdiction, as part of Selangor’s efforts to ensure business continuity.

Subang Jaya Mayor Dato’ Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim said the 30 per cent rebate, aimed at cushioning traders against the impact of global economic pressures, is part of MBSJ’s support measures for local businesses.

“We discussed this yesterday and it (applies) across the board. All tenants in MBSJ premises will be given this reduction,” he told Media Selangor.

He added that although the initiative would result in reduced revenue, the impact is manageable.

“We have calculated the reduction, and it shows a slight decrease in revenue. This demonstrates that local authorities are also willing to make sacrifices for the people in their administrative area,” Amirul said.

On June 19, when tabling Phase 2 of the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package (SREP), Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced that over 21,000 traders renting premises under local authorities statewide will enjoy a 30 per cent reduction in monthly rent for six months starting July.

He added that this would ease operating costs and keep food prices affordable.

SREP is a two-phase, RM355.06 million initiative aimed at combating current global inflation, supply shocks, and economic uncertainties.

Amirul Azizan said the rebate initiative is aimed at improving small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs) cash flow while maintaining business activity in the city.

“It is not just about statements or initiatives being launched. Local authorities also have to play their role. It is fine if we lose a little, but what matters is that the people can recover and businesses can continue.

“From our current assessment, the shortfall is not very large, and we believe it can be managed through some expenditure savings in MBSJ’s operations,” the mayor said.
