SAA postpones AGM to ensure smooth preparations for SUKMA 2026

SERDANG, June 14 — The Selangor Athletics Association (SAA) has emphasised that the decision to postpone its Annual General Meeting (AGM) was made to ensure that preparations for and the organisation of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) are not affected ahead of the sporting event.

Its president Norhayati Karim said the decision was reached following discussions at an SAA executive committee meeting, which took into consideration the importance of organising SUKMA as well as preparations of the Selangor contingent as host state.

“We do not want any last-minute change in leadership to have implications for the organisation of SUKMA and the preparations of the athletes.

“Selangor is the host, therefore our main focus at the moment is to ensure the Games are organised smoothly and that the contingent is at its best,” she told the media after the POS Executive Committee Meeting at the Universiti Putra Malaysia Stadium today.

Following the decision, the SAA submitted an official application to the Sports Commissioner’s Office (PJS) to postpone the AGM, originally scheduled before May 31, and the request was subsequently approved.

Norhayati added that they had also received a letter from the PJS granting an extension to hold the AGM until November 1.

The matter had been discussed at an SAA meeting attended by the majority of the association's affiliated members and office bearers.

“The meeting took place in a very harmonious and mature atmosphere. The focus of discussions for nearly three hours was on athletics development, preparations for organising SUKMA and the management of the Selangor contingent,” she said.

Earlier, a district representative within the SAA, Sri Petaling’s SM Muthu, questioned the validity of the decision to postpone the association’s AGM, claiming that the move did not receive the support of the majority of eligible voting members, as required under the association’s constitution.

Under the SAA constitution, any postponement of the AGM must be approved by a two-thirds majority of members entitled to vote.

“There are nine districts with voting rights, comprising a total of 27 representatives. Under the constitution, approval must first be obtained from eligible voting members before any decision is made.

“We understand that the application was submitted to the PJS without obtaining sufficient approval from the district representatives,” he said.
