Energy crisis: MBPJ adopts local venues, WFH as cost-saving measures

PETALING JAYA, June 13 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is prioritising venues within Selangor for its programmes and events as part of cost-saving measures in response to economic and energy challenges arising from the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato' Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the measures are also in line with the state government’s cost-saving circular, with practical steps being taken to reduce expenditure while maintaining public services.

“Prioritising venues within Selangor for our programmes is one of the ways we are achieving cost savings.

"MBPJ has also adopted work-from-home (WFH) arrangements to reduce operational costs and fuel consumption," he told Media Selangor after attending the Petaling Jaya Neighbourhood Safety Team (PKKPJ) Grant Presentation ceremony at MBPJ Civic Centre last night.

Zahri said the WFH measure helps cut fuel usage by reducing daily commuting and vehicle movements, while supporting broader government efforts to improve efficiency during the current economic climate.

“When WFH is implemented, movement is reduced and fuel consumption decreases significantly. It contributes to substantial savings on fuel usage.”

He added that lower traffic volumes resulting from remote working arrangements also lessen the demand for transportation, contributing to overall energy conservation.

The mayor said that the council’s approach is in line with calls from both the federal and state governments to practise prudent spending and optimise resources.

"MBPJ will continue identifying practical ways to manage expenditure without compromising the delivery of services to residents, while supporting wider initiatives aimed at addressing economic pressures and promoting sustainable resource use," he said.

The energy crisis stems from the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has escalated after United States military strikes in the region and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, increasing uncertainty over global oil supply and prices.
