GOMBAK, May 29 — The state government has completed the final phase of a long-running relocation exercise involving the Kampung Indian Settlement, paving the way for the redevelopment of the area into a new planned Indian village.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the issue has now been fully resolved with the relocation of the final group of 10 affected families.

“This issue (related to the occupation of lots not originally owned) actually started in 2009, and this is the last batch that we have managed to resolve,” he told the media after the Form 5A Notice handover ceremony to the remaining affected residents in Taman Sri Gombak today.

Amirudin also presented approval letters for temporary occupation licences to participants in the Buku Hijau programme during the event.

In December last year, he said the state government had allocated RM10 million to redevelop Kampung Indian Settlement, with a focus on providing more comfortable housing and well-organised basic infrastructure.

The scope of development includes widening roads over a 2.5km stretch, installing street lighting, and constructing a new drainage system to address flooding in the area.

Amirudin added that at the time, most residents, including over 40 families affected by the redevelopment, had agreed in principle to the project's implementation and that they would be relocated to Batu Arang.

Speaking today, he said the infrastructure works for the Kampung Indian Settlement are already underway and that the relocation of the final 10 families marked the completion of the long-running issue.

“I am grateful that together with the coordinators, district officers and residents’ associations, we have managed to resolve this matter,” Amirudin said.

Earlier in his speech, the Menteri Besar described the relocation as among the state government’s most meaningful achievements.

He acknowledged that the process could not satisfy everyone immediately, but emphasised that they had to act within existing regulations and laws.

The state government also carried out surveys and planning to ensure the Kampung Indian Settlement redevelopment could provide a more organised and comfortable environment for residents.

“We understand that people want everything resolved immediately, but the government has to act according to regulations and proper processes.

“We want to transform the area into a more comfortable place to live, with proper rights and better facilities for the people,” Amirudin said.
