SHAH ALAM, May 15 — A Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) investigation has revealed that foamy water detected in Sungai Semenyih on Tuesday could have been caused by discharge from Taman Perindustrian Sri Haneco.
LUAS said the foam was seen at around 6pm on Tuesday, upon which Code Yellow was activated under the Selangor State Water Resource Pollution Emergency Manual for investigation and immediate mitigation.
It added that checks at the location revealed foamy water along 300m of the river, which could have risked operations at the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant (WTP) around 19km away.
“The Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM) was activated by pumping water from Ponds B and C to channel water directly to the Sungai Semenyih WTP as an immediate mitigation measure to ensure there were no disruptions to raw water supply to the plant.
“Further investigations are ongoing on premises in the industrial area to identify the source of the foamy water and to ensure compliance with the Zero-Discharge Policy (ZDP),” it said in a statement today.
LUAS also said that a team monitored the location until Wednesday morning and found no more foamy discharge or abnormal odour.
“The SJAM operation was ended at 10.30am on Wednesday, and the Sungai Semenyih WTP returned to usual operations with raw water supply from Sungai Semenyih.
“The current situation on site and river flow are normal and under control, and there is no risk to the WTP’s operations,” it added.
However, LUAS said monitoring in the area will continue, including with checks on nearby industrial premises’ effluent, to prevent a recurrence.
