SHAH ALAM, May 5 — An odour pollution incident at Sungai Semenyih has been brought under control, with the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) now operational again.

The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) said that at 8pm last night, Sungai Semenyih and Sungai Kabul were declared normal while the Sungai Semenyih WTP had resumed operations.

According to LUAS, the Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM) that was activated as a mitigation measure has been terminated after the situation was brought under control, with raw water now being channelled from Sungai Semenyih.

“Investigations with Air Selangor revealed premises in the Mahkota Beranang Industrial Area that are suspected to be the source of pollution, believed to involve recycling activities.

“Checks found coloured discharge believed to have been channelled directly into the drainage system (which) entered Sungai Kabul,” it said in a statement.

LUAS said immediate action was taken as soon as the pollution was detected, including early intervention with 100kg of activated carbon as a deodoriser and intensive monitoring in the area.

The outlet was issued with an order under Section 121(1) of the LUAS Enactment 1999 to halt the effluent flow, clean up the discharge, and exercise controls.

Samples from the location have been sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis, while an investigation paper has been opened under Section 79(4) of the LUAS Enactment 1999.

LUAS expressed its appreciation to Air Selangor, the Environment Department (DOE), the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), and the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) for their help in ensuring immediate control of the situation.

On May 3, an abnormal smell of up to two threshold odour number (TON) was detected at Sungai Semenyih at around 10.30pm, after which LUAS activated Code Yellow due to risks to the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi WTPs.
