Dead fish, foamy water in Sg Penchala believed due to industrial waste

SHAH ALAM, March 25 — Dead fish and foamy water in Sungai Penchala, detected on Monday, are believed to be a result of waste flowing from a nearby industrial area, said the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS).

It said immediate surveillance was launched in the area and that it used drones to identify locations that present pollution risks along the river.

“After foamy water and several dead fish were found at Sungai Penchala (on Monday), LUAS immediately investigated the location.

“Early investigations revealed that the incident is believed to have been caused by (waste) flow from an industrial area around Sungai Penchala,” it said in a statement.

LUAS added that water quality sampling was conducted and samples have been sent to its laboratory for analysis.

It also said further checks will be done with local authorities and the Environment Department (DOE) to identify activities in the area that could have contributed to the incident.

LUAS explained that it is working to issue Zero-Discharge Policy (ZDP) compliance notices to premises in the area as a long-term control and prevention measure.
