SHAH ALAM, May 11 — The state will host a three-day state-level Wesak Day celebration at the Sugata Dharma Vihara Temple in Jenjarom, Kuala Langat, from June 5 to June 7, which is expected to strengthen multicultural harmony while promoting Buddhist culture and cultural tourism in conjunction with Visit Selangor Year 2026.
State executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han said the annual celebration, organised since 2009, carries the theme ‘Bridging Through Digital, Cultivating Wisdom Together’.
The programme is jointly organised by the Sugata Dharma Vihara Temple in collaboration with the Malaysian Buddhist Consultative Council, with support from the Kuala Lumpur/Selangor branch of the Malaysian Buddhist Association and the Maha Karuna Buddhist Society.
“Our overarching goal is to promote positive social values and the practical application of the Dharma,” he said during a media conference at the State Secretariat Building today.
Among those present at the press conference was Kajang state assemblyman David Cheong, who is also the event's organising committee chairman.
He said that transportation, such as buggy services, would be provided from the nearby car park for visitors. The arrangement is intended to remind the public of the true significance of Wesak.
“It is designed to guide the public back to the core significance of Wesak, the ‘Triple Celebration’ commemorating the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana, thereby elevating society’s accurate understanding of the faith,” Cheong said.
Ng added that Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari will officially launch the event.
“A major focal point of this year's event is its unique alignment with the date: June 6, 2026.
“To mark the three sixes, exactly 666 statues of Prince Siddhartha will be assembled for a public Buddha bathing ceremony,” he said.
The event is expected to attract about 5,000 visitors and will feature a wide range of family-friendly cultural, spiritual, and wellness activities, with vegetarian meals also provided.
Among the programmes lined up are blessing and chanting sessions by Mahayana and Theravada monks, sutra-copying activities, prayer wheels, craft workshops, and exhibitions, including the Buddhist Stamp Exhibition presented by the World Buddhist Stamps Gallery.
It will also feature a photography exhibition, a children’s art competition, and free health screenings covering bone density, cholesterol, body fat, and muscle mass.
The celebration will take place at the Sugata Dharma Vihara in Bandar Saujana Putra, Jenjarom, from 3pm to 9pm on June 5, from 8am to 9pm on June 6, and from 9am to 3pm on June 7.
