SHAH ALAM, Apr 20 — The Sultan of Selangor has decreed that this year’s Sultan of Selangor Cup, involving a football match between Selangor and Singapore, be cancelled following economic instability arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj instead proposed that the administration focus on organising the Piala Jubli Perak football tournament involving under-15 students from across all districts in the state.

“I consent for the Piala Jubli Perak football tournament to be organised involving under-15 school students from across districts as an effort to nurture young talent and instil a sense of sportsmanship at grassroots level.

“Furthermore, football is the most popular sport among the people of Selangor,” His Royal Highness said in conjunction with the opening of the First Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly.

Last week, TSSC 2026 chairman and team manager Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar said Sultan Sharafuddin had consented to the cancellation of the Sultan of Selangor Cup 2026 football match scheduled to take place at Stadium Merdeka on November 7.

He said the decision was made due to challenging global economic conditions stemming from unrest in West Asia, which has also affected Malaysia.

The competition was introduced in 2001 to revive the football rivalry between Selangor and Singapore, which once featured prominently in the Malaysia Cup competition.
