KLANG, Oct 25 — A state’s progress should not be measured solely by investment figures or high gross domestic product (GDP), but by how effectively its wealth benefits the people.
The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, said rapid development and economic prosperity would be meaningless if some residents continued to struggle financially.
“I wish to emphasise that the measure of a state’s progress is not solely based on the amount of investment reaching billions of ringgit, rapid development or the achievement of a high GDP.
“What is the use of a state possessing great wealth if its people are still living in hardship? True progress is when all its people can enjoy and experience the state’s wealth.
“For example, in a developed and wealthy state, the people, especially the poor and those facing hardship, should benefit from and enjoy that wealth,” His Royal Highness said.
The Sultan was speaking at the Proclamation of Titles, Oath-Taking and Paying Homage Ceremony for Selangor Palace Dignitaries and Royal Dato', alongside the Selangor State Honours Investiture Ceremony held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee marking 25 years of His Royal Highness’ reign at Balairung Seri, Istana Alam Shah, today
Sultan Sharafuddin also stressed the importance of ensuring residents have access to education, affordable housing, wider employment opportunities and a clean, healthy environment.
“What is important to emphasise is that the people feel they have never been forgotten by the government in its pursuit of rapid development,” His Royal Highness said.
The Sultan also urged the state government to intensify efforts towards achieving progress and excellence across all sectors.
“I want to see Selangor become a state that continues to progress, is competitive, has a high level of modernisation, and has knowledgeable and excellent people, while at the same time continuing to uphold religious values, good manners and humanity,” His Royal Highness said.
Sultan Sharafuddin also reaffirmed His Royal Highness’ commitment to safeguarding Islam’s position as the state religion while promoting harmony and mutual respect among Selangor’s diverse communities.
“I will also continue to carry out my responsibility to preserve the position of Islam as the state religion, as well as ensure that Islam continues to be respected and practised by Muslims in the state of Selangor without anyone questioning it.
“At the same time, I call upon all the people of Selangor to continue living in peace, respecting and understanding one another,” His Royal Highness added.
