SHAH ALAM, Apr 20 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has consented for his Silver Jubilee celebration marking 25 years of reign to be held in a modest manner following the current global economic downturn.
The Ruler said the decision was made after consultations with members of the Selangor Royal Council, taking into account current conditions that have also affected the country and its people.
His Royal Highness said several large-scale programmes have been cancelled, including the Royal Banquet at Istana Alam Shah, fireworks displays, as well as royal and public concerts.
Instead, the Sultan has decided to hold a tea reception with the people at Padang Mahkota, Istana Alam Shah in Klang, involving 8,000 guests comprising orphans, persons with disabilities, government officers serving in the state, as well as retired military personnel, police officers and firefighters.
“I have taken note of the allocation provided by the state government. However, given the current global economic downturn, the effects of which are also felt in our country, and understanding the hardships faced by the people, “I want all expenditure for this Silver Jubilee celebration to be carried out prudently and managed with full transparency and integrity. Any savings should be used to assist those in need and must not be used for other purposes.
“Any parties wishing to contribute or sponsor the celebration should channel their contributions to the Sultan of Selangor Foundation or other welfare bodies to help those in need,” His Royal Highness said in conjunction with the opening of the First Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.
The Sultan will also host a tea reception with chief executive officers or representatives of foreign investor companies in appreciation of their contributions to the state’s growth and development.
“I express my highest gratitude to Allah for granting me the opportunity to continue serving the state and the people of Selangor throughout this period.
“Time passes so quickly, and not all rulers are able to reach 25 years of reign,” he said.
Preparations for the Silver Jubilee celebration had begun since January, with Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah consenting to carry out the Silver Jubilee Tour across nine districts.
