SHAH ALAM, April 17 — A free breakfast initiative to be implemented by the state government starting this August is expected to ease the burden on families while helping students focus better in school.
A survey by Media Selangor found the move has been well received by the public as it not only makes it easier for students to have breakfast before class, but also reduces parents’ daily expenses.

Retiree Abd Halim Mahmud, 68, said the programme would particularly benefit students whose parents do not have time to prepare breakfast before school.
“It is good for children. At the very least, they can eat first before going into class.
“If they are hungry, it is indeed difficult to focus. But it also depends on the type of food provided,” he said.
Abd Halim added that the initiative could save parents around RM3 to RM4 a day, which would have a noticeable impact over the course of a month.
He also hopes that food providers will prioritise cleanliness and quality to prevent food poisoning.

Meanwhile, Sarvina Kantharaj, 47, said the assistance is relevant amid the rising living costs.
“If the government provides breakfast, it can reduce the burden as we do not need to give as much pocket money to our children. Daily expenses can be reduced, and it really helps families,” she said.
The mother of two school-going children also hopes the programme will be implemented consistently, while stressing the importance of providing healthy food including fruits, vegetables, and balanced meals.

For Selia Chyn, 69, the availability of breakfast at school would benefit students who are often in a rush in the morning.
“At least they do not need to go out to find food. They can come to school and have breakfast straight away. I hope the food provided is sufficient and of good quality,” she said.
Yesterday, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari announced the implementation of free breakfast assistance for students in 873 schools, to be provided by local authorities, starting in August.
The initiative is part of the RM131 million Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package introduced to address cost of living challenges and global economic uncertainties.
