Petaling Jaya improves resident safety with inclusive infrastructure

PETALING JAYA, April 12 — Petaling Jaya is prioritising safer, more inclusive, and more user-friendly urban infrastructure development under various initiatives to improve public facilities, mobility and safety, said Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon.

He added that among the Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) main projects is the construction of 9.8km of walkways in 20 locations, involving a cost of RM84.1 billion. These lanes would be equipped with CCTV cameras, safe crosswalks, and sufficient lighting to improve user safety, especially at night.

“Based on the Petaling Jaya Transport Master Plan (PIPPJ) 2.0, MBPJ has planned various infrastructural improvements to support inclusive mobility that all segments of the community can benefit from.

“Other than new walkways, MBPJ will also upgrade five existing paths for pedestrian and micromobility use and develop 25.6km of green-blue corridors along main rivers to support sustainable mobility,” he said recently when sharing updates on the Petaling Jaya Care Economy Action Plan 2025-2030 at his office in Menara MBPJ.

Zahri added that 13 existing bus stops will be upgraded with solar panels and device-charging facilities to improve public transport users’ comfort.

According to him, safety can also be improved with accessible emergency buttons and direct communication to control centres at certain MRT and LRT stations, which would cost around RM195,000.

“Special parking lots for electric vehicles (EVs) will be provided at 25 town centres, while more orderly parking systems will be introduced at nine People’s Housing Projects (PPR).

“The Jalan Othman Bus Terminal will also be moved to a new location as a more modern and user-friendly integrated transport hub, with an estimated development cost of RM360 million,” he explained.

Previously, he said safety and environment are among the five cores of the Petaling Jaya Care Economy Action Plan 2025-2030 to ensure residents’ well-being.

Zahri also said that around 70 per cent of plans are under MBPJ’s jurisdiction, while the rest require cooperation with other government agencies, with the success of the plan depending on commitment from all parties.
