Selangor reaffirms ban on pig farming, citing Sultan’s decree, eco concerns

SHAH ALAM, April 11 — The state government has reaffirmed its stance that pig farming activities will no longer be allowed to continue in Selangor, signalling a clear policy direction in line with environmental and public health priorities.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim said the decision is consistent with the decree previously issued by the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj in February, which called for an end to such activities within the state.

“In respect to the Sultan of Selangor decree, pig farming activities are no longer allowed to be done in Selangor,” he told Media Selangor today.

The reaffirmation follows concerns raised by players in the pig farming industry, who had expressed readiness to comply with stricter regulations and modernise their operations.

However, farmers told the New Straits Times that uncertainty remains over relocation plans should a state-wide ban be enforced.

Meanwhile, many are still exploring ways to continue operating at their current sites by enhancing waste management practices and upgrading farming systems, including adopting more controlled and environmentally friendly methods.

Some operators have already scaled down production following disease outbreaks and shifting regulatory expectations, while others are holding back on investments in new technologies pending clearer policy direction from the state government.

Despite these efforts, the state maintains that the long-term direction is non-negotiable, prioritising environmental sustainability and community well-being over the continuation of pig farming.

His Royal Highness had previously voiced his opposition to any form of pig farming in the state, citing concerns over pollution and its environmental impact.

In statements made in February, the Sultan’s private secretary Dato’ Mohamad Munir Bani said the Ruler welcomed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s remarks that pig farming should not be carried out in areas where it faces local opposition or could spark controversy.

Moreover, Menteri Besar Dato'Seri Amirudin Shari had previously assured that existing pig farms will be closed gradually, albeit at an accelerated pace, in collaboration with the Selangor Veterinary Department.
