SHAH ALAM, May 6 — Approximately 307 police reports have been lodged over the circulation of a caricature on social media containing elements deemed insulting to the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.
The Selangor Royal Office said the matter had been presented to His Royal Highness by Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar.
“Of the total, 282 police reports are related to posts from the Facebook account ‘Huayan The Pureland Learning Center’, which allegedly contained insulting elements directed at the Sultan of Selangor.
“In addition, seven reports were lodged concerning posts from the Facebook account ‘Beo Choon Yap’, while another 18 reports were made against the account ‘Lucas Liam’,” it said in a Facebook post today.
The Selangor Royal Office added that one arrest has been made so far in Penang to assist in investigations, while the police are actively pursuing further inquiries into the case.
The spread of the offensive material is believed to be linked to issues surrounding pig farming in Selangor, which were raised during the recent Fourth Term Sitting of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly.
Earlier, Shazeli said that they had received 280 reports as of Sunday (May 3) regarding the circulation of the insulting material on social media since April 25.
He said the reports were lodged by various parties nationwide following what was described as an extreme provocation involving the depiction of a pig dressed in yellow royal attire with the intention of insulting the Sultan.
Previously, several parties, including Menteri Besar Dato Seri Amirudin Shari, state executive councillors, and non-governmental organisations, had called on the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to take firm action against those involved in spreading offensive content.
