SHAH ALAM, Sept 7 — Sungai Bernam is set to become the centrepiece of Sabak’s transformation under a proposed river trail development combining heritage, recreation, tourism and economic activities.
The proposed Denai Sungai Bernam development was unveiled in conjunction with the Selangor-level World Rivers Day 2026 celebration at Pangkalan Sabak recently.
Infrastructure and agriculture executive councillor Dato’ Izham Hashim officiated at the event.
Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB) president Awaluddin Zakaria said the proposed trail would stretch 150 metres along the banks of Sungai Bernam, with a ‘Riverside Heritage Town’ concept at the heart of the development.
He said the proposal was designed to establish Sungai Bernam as a recreational, tourism and economic asset while strengthening the identity of Sabak, a town with historical significance and close ties to the river.
“The main components proposed are a 150-metre waterfront esplanade, a viewing deck, a new jetty, shops and commercial spaces, as well as a playground,” he said on Facebook.
Awaluddin said the viewing deck would offer panoramic views of Sungai Bernam and had the potential to become an iconic attraction at Denai Sungai Bernam.
“The new jetty could revive passenger boat services between Sabak and Hutan Melintang, creating a more attractive river-based tourism experience while connecting the communities in both areas,” he said.
At the same time, improvements to the surrounding areas of Sabak have also been proposed, including murals along the back lanes of shoplots and enhancements to Pasar Karat and Pasar Marjina to create new attractions and revitalise existing commercial areas.
“We expect the development to strengthen Sabak’s main recreational area while creating a riverside leisure destination that will attract residents and visitors,” Awaluddin added.
