SUBANG JAYA, Mar 18 — Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) has formally launched a pilot micromobility sandbox in SS15 to assess safety, usage, and regulatory needs in the high-traffic commercial and education hub.
Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng Mei Sze said the e-scooter pilot project, which began in January, aims to ease traffic congestion and parking challenges in the area, while supporting last-mile connectivity for commuters, students and residents.
No accidents have been reported since operations began and usage has averaged around 100 trips weekly.
“I believe that not everyone, especially students, has a car. So this project plays a very important role to help them move around,” she said in a press conference after the sandbox launch near the SS15 LRT station here today.
The initiative, which runs until January 31, 2027, features designated parking zones, safety infrastructure, speed limits, and geofencing technology, with all users required to register through the Beam Mobility app before using it.
MBSJ received the Transport Ministry’s (MOT) approval to run the two-year pilot project from February 2025 to January 2027 to test safety and operations.
Ng said safety measures have been strengthened compared to previous e-scooter operators.
“Before anyone can use the e-mobility services, they have to sign up through the app and take a safety test. Only after passing the test can they unlock the scooters, she said, adding that these measures ensure accountability and safety for both users and pedestrians.
Beam Mobility Malaysia general manager Nathaniel Ong-Samuel explained that the geofencing technology within the app restricts scooters to approved areas, automatically slowing or disabling them if users go beyond designated routes.
“All these safety measures are put in place to ensure that users, car users, and pedestrians are kept safe,” he said.
Beam Mobility also launched promotional offers for the SS15 launch today, allowing first-time users to try a scooter for RM5 under the TRYME offer, while topping up RM20 earns RM5 credit valid across SS15 for a month.
University students, meanwhile, can use the code UNLOCKMEUNI for RM2.50 rides, with the promotion limited to 50 students per university.
At the same time, Ng said her office is offering RM5 credit via the code ADUNSJ5, limited to 100 users with one redemption per person, valid for one year.

Mixed response
Ng said authorities are also considering expanding the programme beyond SS15, with potential areas including Sunway, Puchong, and USJ, depending on the outcome of the pilot project.
“The continuation of the initiative will depend on data collected throughout the pilot, including safety records and public feedback, with ongoing monitoring and improvements,” she said.
A total of 45 e-scooters are available at the SS15 LRT station, in front of Q Bistro on Jalan SS15/4G, and at Asia e University on Jalan SS15/4.
When asked about the public response to the sandbox, Ng said it has been mixed, with younger users largely supportive due to its convenience and environmental benefits.
“There are some who are worried and some who are supportive. By and large, especially among the younger generation, they see this as a step forward, particularly in addressing climate change.”
Meanwhile, Ng said MBSJ has implemented licensing and regulatory measures to support the pilot project, including a RM200 fee for each e-scooter deployment site, and launched promotional offers in collaboration with Beam Mobility for students and the public.
