SHAH ALAM, Jan 22 — The Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) has launched the Micromobility Sandbox in the SS15 Commercial Area as a pilot project to assess the effectiveness of micromobility vehicles in urban areas.
The initiative also aims to evaluate safety levels and regulatory requirements for micromobility vehicles.
“A total of 45 micromobility scooters have been placed at three strategic locations to facilitate user movement and support sustainable urban mobility,” it said in a Facebook post.
The three locations are the SS15 Light Rapid Transit (LRT) Station, in front of Q Bistro along Jalan SS15/4G, and Asia University along Jalan SS15/4 in Subang Jaya.
MBSJ added that this reflects its commitment to strengthening a safe, low-carbon, and sustainable urban transport system, in line with smart city aspirations.
Subang Jaya state assemblyman Michelle Ng Mei Sze said that implementing the Micromobility Sandbox is important to address limited parking and traffic congestion in SS15.
“SS15 continues to face parking problems despite the construction of a multi-storey parking system. This issue affects daily movement, so it is important to provide alternative modes of transport,” she said in a Facebook post.
Over the past two years, Ng's office, together with MBSJ and the Transport Ministry, has worked actively to realise the initiative.
“This initiative introduces electric scooters as an alternative mode of transport for medium distances, enabling movement beyond walking alone,” she said.
Ng noted that in SS15, the public can use the LRT, the Bus Rapid Transit, the demand-responsive transport, or walk. Electric scooters will serve as an additional alternative route, in line with the bicycle lanes introduced.
The first phase of the cycling lane project connects SS16 and SS15, followed by a second phase to enhance safety and extend the route to SS14 and SS18. The third phase will cover routes from SS19 to SS12.
“When all this infrastructure is completed, it is expected to reduce traffic congestion and provide more green, people-friendly transport options,” she said.
