Altimet urges clear guidelines on AI use in creative industries

SHAH ALAM, March 14 — The government is urged to establish clear guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent the technology from being misused, including in the creation of creative works such as music, films, and digital content.

Lembah Jaya assemblyman Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad said this is important since most AI-generated works or content are developed based on existing materials created by others.

“I agree that AI is a tool. It is not a replacement for production in the film or music industry, but rather a new tool that can be a friend or foe depending on how individuals use it.

“AI also produces works or content based on other people’s creations, so there is room for exploitation if there are no clear guidelines,” he said when contacted by Media Selangor.

Syed Ahmad, also known as Altimet, said users also have a role in ensuring the technology is not used in ways that violate ethics or established regulations.

He added that having a related law would make it easier for the public to report AI technology abuse.

“If users feel that an AI-created work violates guidelines, they can report it or at least refrain from supporting the person who produced it."

He also believes that artists and creators will not be left behind even if they do not use AI, as most continue to produce original and creative works.

Recently, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said AI should be seen as a tool to strengthen the creative process in the arts, particularly music and filmmaking, rather than replace the role of creators.

He noted that the creative process is fundamentally based on human ideas and touch, which must be preserved to ensure the future relevance of the creative industry.
