SHAH ALAM, Oct 30 — The Education Ministry must ensure that introducing artificial intelligence (AI) in primary schools does not undermine pupils’ critical thinking skills.

Malaysian Cyber Consumer Association (MCCA) president Siraj Jalil said one concern is that pupils might become overly reliant on AI to obtain answers without making an effort to understand concepts or solve problems themselves.

“This dependence could lead to pupils using their own thinking less when answering basic questions. If they do not know something, they ask AI.

“For example, if they immediately turn to AI even for a question such as five plus five, that could become a problem. Excessive reliance is risky because pupils may no longer want to think critically as part of the learning process,” he told Media Selangor.

Yesterday, Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said AI fundamentals will be introduced in digital technology subjects in primary schools under the 2027 school curriculum. AI learning will also be strengthened in relevant subjects at secondary school level.

In response, Siraj said MCCA supported the introduction of basic AI education, but its implementation must be accompanied by appropriate guidance to ensure the technology supports learning without replacing the thinking process.

He opined that pupils might be more inclined to turn to AI rather than teachers if they perceived the technology as more intelligent or able to provide answers faster.

“Education is not merely about delivering information. It also involves teachers guiding pupils, shaping their thinking, and educating them.

“We learn by asking teachers not simply because of the knowledge they impart, but also because teachers are there to educate us,” Siraj said.

He emphasised that AI education must prioritise developing critical thinking and responsible technology use, rather than focusing solely on ensuring pupils become proficient in using it.

“We support the introduction of AI literacy, but its implementation must prioritise safety and critical thinking, rather than simply being excited to see pupils become skilled at using AI,” Siraj said.

Secondary students stand at attention during the morning assembly on the first day of the school session at SMK Seri Serdang in Serdang, on January 12, 2026.
