AMPANG, August 25 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is targeting the implementation of 4,000 Safe Internet Campaign programmes this year, with participation expected to reach one million people.
Since its launch in early 2025 until June this year, the campaign has reached 10,303 schools and higher education institutions, in addition to 2,142 community programmes held nationwide.
It said an interactive approach is being used to encourage public participation through various educational activities, exhibitions, engagement sessions, and digital awareness initiatives.
“These interactive programmes encourage community participation through various educational activities, exhibitions, engagement sessions, and digital awareness initiatives.
“We aim to enhance public understanding of online safety, personal data protection, responsible social media use, and ways to avoid becoming involved in cybercrime,” the MCMC said in a statement.
Earlier, it organised the 2026 Safe Internet Campaign Community Carnival for the Hulu Langat district, which was officiated by Lembah Jaya state assemblyman Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad.

Speaking to the media after the programme, he said the initiative would be held in seven series across Selangor, with one of them taking place in the Lembah Jaya state constituency.
Cyber awareness campaigns must be intensified within the local community following an increase in online crime cases, based on data from the Ampang district police headquarters.
“The main targets are senior citizens and single mothers. There have been several cases involving single mothers who were promised lucrative returns.
“They used their retirement savings after being told they would receive high returns within a week or two. They believed the claims and ended up exhausting their savings,” Syed Ahmad said.
The Safe Internet Campaign is being carried out in phases from 2025 to 2027, targeting various segments of society, including children, teenagers, higher education students, teachers, parents, MADANI communities, and senior citizens.
It is also a strategic initiative to build a safer and more responsible digital ecosystem, while strengthening Malaysia's cyber security and protecting users from increasingly complex digital risks and threats.
