SHAH ALAM, March 13 — Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari is confident that the Cabinet's 'historic' decision to approve the construction of a Third Terminal in Pulau Carey will further elevate Port Klang's position as a regional and global logistics hub.

Noting that it already handled 14.64 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2024, he said that the state government will work to complete the Pulau Carey Port Development Master Plan.

"For this purpose, the Selangor State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), together with the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS), a subsidiary of the state government, will spearhead the development.

"The Master Plan will cover various aspects, including public infrastructure like utilities, renewable energy, public transport, digital connectivity, industrial areas, housing, as well as the preservation of local communities, including Malay reserve land and Orang Asli areas in Pulau Carey," he said in a statement today.

Amirudin added that the plan will also assess the feasibility of establishing a Special Local Authority to oversee the Third Terminal's overall development, per Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that the project should be expedited for the future of the national economy.

"The state government is also committed to working closely with the Transport Ministry and relevant Federal agencies to optimise the development process, while creating a Special Economic Zone within the area.

"All of these efforts are crucial to ensure that the Third Terminal in Pulau Carey enhances the potential of Port Klang and becomes a key gateway for economic opportunities not only into Malaysia but also into Southeast Asia, particularly at a time when the world is facing global crises.

On Wednesday (March 11), Transport Minister Anthony Loke said a memorandum on the Third Terminal produced by his ministry was approved by the Cabinet, with the state government to oversee its implementation.

To this, the state government will establish a special-purpose vehicle with private companies to secure private investment to build and operate the terminal.

Previously, Anwar had directed all relevant agencies to move swiftly in realising the development of Pulau Carey's Third Terminal.

He said the project should serve as a new model for national development that is more efficient, well-organised and with integrity.

The terminal is a strategic project aimed at strengthening the country’s economic capacity and position in the port and logistics sector.
