SHAH ALAM, March 11 — More than 2,500 homeowners in Petaling Jaya have received nearly RM1 million in cumulative tax rebates since 2011 for adopting greener practices at home, The Star reported.

The rebate scheme by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) rewards residents who take steps to make their homes more environmentally friendly, particularly in areas such as energy use, water conservation and waste management.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the total rebates credited to eligible households have reached almost RM1 million since the initiative was introduced.

For 2025 alone, he said MBPJ approved 243 applications amounting to RM81,075.28. It will be credited to residents in the second term of 2026.

He added that residents can now apply for and track their tax rebate status online through a new platform called PJ Eco Rebate (PJeR), the first digital pilot of its kind by a Malaysian local authority, replacing the previous manual process.

“Through this new system, residents can submit applications and upload documents more easily and efficiently,” he said when launching the platform at MBPJ headquarters, as quoted by the English daily.

Zahri also announced an allocation of RM500,000 for the Petaling Jaya Sustainable Community Grant (PJ SEED) this year.

Since 2019, the grant programme has supported 180 projects with a total investment of RM3.2 million, with 27 projects approved in 2025 alone, involving funding of more than RM513,000.

He said the initiative provides an important platform to encourage creative and innovative sustainability ideas from organisations and communities.
