SHAH ALAM, Mar 8 — Volunteer registration for the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 has exceeded expectations, with sign-ups now six times higher than initial projections, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the state has received 30,000 registrations as of today, far surpassing its target of around 5,000 volunteers, reflecting strong enthusiasm, particularly among young people.

“We initially projected 5,000 volunteers, but now it’s already 30,000. The majority of young people are eager to volunteer in support of Malaysia,” he told reporters after an iftar with activists and university students at the Menteri Besar’s official residence here today.

Amirudin expressed his excitement at the overwhelming response, adding that the state will strive to accommodate as many volunteers as possible, ensuring the event is well-organised and efficiently managed.

He added that training for volunteers is scheduled to begin in May, with preparations for both athlete readiness and event logistics proceeding ahead of schedule.

Previously, on February 11, it was reported that the SUKMA 2026 Volunteer Programme received an overwhelming response, with 18,000 applications submitted within just 72 hours of the registration opening.

Selangor will host the 22nd edition of SUKMA, which will take place from August 15 to 24, 2026, with the opening ceremony scheduled at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC). Para SUKMA will be held from September 5 to 10, 2026.

When asked for updates on the preparation of facilities for the games, Amirudin said work is progressing steadily, including major renovations at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre here, costing around RM40 million.

“We target completion (of the works at the aquatic centre) by June, about two months before SUKMA. So, all facilities will be ready (in time).

Earlier, at the same ceremony, Amirudin handed out incentives to 121 Selangor athletes who participated in the SEA Games and Para SEA Games in Thailand from December 9 to 20, 2025, recognising their medal winning contributions.
