SHAH ALAM, Feb 25 — The Education Ministry (MOE) plans to build new secondary schools in Pekan Batu 18, Hulu Langat and Pekan Semenyih to address overcrowding at existing institutions, said minister Fadhlina Sidek.
In a written parliamentary reply, she said all secondary schools in the two towns are currently operating in double sessions and have more classes than available physical classrooms.
The schools are SMK Abdul Jalil and SMK Dusun Nanding in Pekan Batu 18, and SMK Engku Husain, SMK Bandar Rinching, and SMK Bandar Tasik Kesuma in Pekan Semenyih.
To tackle school overcrowding in Pekan Batu 18, Fadhlina said based on MOE’s assessment, there is a pressing need for a new secondary school to be built, although a suitable site has yet to be identified.
“The MOE, through the Selangor Education Department, is identifying potential sites for land acquisition.
“Once ownership and acquisition processes are completed, the MOE will submit a proposal to the central agencies for the construction of a new secondary school under the Five Year Malaysia Plan (RMLT),” she said in response to Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan on the need for more secondary schools in high-density areas in his constituency.
As a short-term measure, Fadhlina said the MOE has added three classrooms at SMK Dusun Nanding last year using the Industrialised Building System (IBS), which were completed in October and put into use earlier this year.
Regarding Pekan Semenyih, she said the MOE has approved land acquisition for the construction of SMK Eco Majestic under the Third Rolling Plan (RP3) 2023 in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), about 7.5km from Pekan Semenyih.
She said the ministry also plans to resubmit a proposal for SMK Prima Saujana under RP3 2028 in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), after its 2027 submission was rejected.
Fadhlina added that the ministry has identified a developer-donated land in Bandar Sunway Semenyih, about 3.6km from Pekan Semenyih, for another future secondary school.
“The MOE will submit the proposal for construction of the new school to the Economy Ministry under the RMLT once acquisition and ownership processes are completed,” she said.
