Indonesia posts 54.6t rupiah budget deficit

JAKARTA, Feb 23 — Indonesia’s State Budget (APBN) recorded a deficit of 54.6 trillion rupiah (RM12.6 billion), or 0.21 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) as of January 31, with the government describing the fiscal position as well-controlled and within the design corridor of the 2026 APBN.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said the primary balance, which amounted to 4.2 trillion rupiah (RM972.02 million), also reflected the government's prudent fiscal management.

The APBN realisation for the same period showed solid performance, with state revenue reaching 172.7 trillion rupiah (RM39.9 billion), or 5.5 per cent of the APBN target, up 9.5 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y).

“This performance is supported by tax revenues that remain strong as well as non-tax state revenue, which has begun to show recovery outside last year’s non-recurring components,” he said in a press conference broadcast via the Finance Ministry’s YouTube account today.

On the expenditure side, Purbaya noted that state spending was at 227.3 trillion rupiah (RM52.6 billion), or 5.9 per cent of the APBN ceiling, up 25.7 per cent y-o-y.

“This shows the acceleration of government spending since the beginning of the year, particularly to support priority programmes, maintain purchasing power, and encourage economic growth in the first quarter,” he said.

Financing stood at 105.1 trillion rupiah (RM24.3 billion) or 15.2 per cent of the target, carried out in a measured and anticipatory manner to maintain liquidity and financial market stability.

Overall, Purbaya stressed that the 2026 APBN continues to function optimally as both a shock absorber and an engine of economic growth.

“With revenue growing positively, accelerated spending and a deficit that remains under control, we are optimistic the APBN will continue to maintain stability while supporting the momentum of national economic growth throughout 2026,” he said.
