SHAH ALAM, Feb 15 — Kampung Ladang Batu poultry farmers face temporary closure if they violate hygiene management rules and the farms attract flies to residential areas, said Tanjung Sepat assemblyman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah.
He said he and Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) representatives met with 12 chicken farm operators yesterday to address the resurgence in complaints about flies.
“The discussions revealed that only one or two farms haven’t adhered to established (hygiene) management methods, which could be the source of the fly infestation.
“Among steps that must be taken is to undergo ‘fogging’ every time chickens are brought out (of their enclosures), shutting enclosures firmly, and ensuring chicken droppings are left to dry for several days before disposal. If these methods are implemented correctly, the fly population can be brought under control,” he said.
However, the state executive councillor for housing and culture said there are operators who sell moist chicken droppings as fertiliser for a quick profit, which contributes to the infestation.
Borhan also said similar complaints have been received from villagers in other areas, including Kanchong Tengah and Kampung Endah, which are nearby poultry farms.
He explained that strict warnings have been issued to offenders and monitoring will be stepped up with the involvement of various agencies including the Veterinary Services Department (DVS), MPKL, and Environment Department (DOE).
“If they still fail to cooperate, strict action will be taken, including by temporarily shutting their farms to teach them a lesson. When such action is taken, operators are usually more aware and compliant,” he added.
Borhan said non-compliance with hygiene management methods also stems from operators’ efforts to lower labour costs, using poor-quality insect control substances, and not taking local authorities’ advice.
He reminded operators that pollution issues shouldn’t recur, as was the previous case with pig farming where waste was channelled into rivers and the ocean.
“I was also informed that there are complaints about the uncontrolled disposal of disinfectant, which could contribute to the breeding of flies,” Borhan added.
Previously, media reports said Kampung Ladang Batu residents’ lives have been compromised by a fly infestation, claimed to be due to poultry farming in the area since 2023.
Residents have reportedly had to buy fly sticker traps in bulk, put up insect nets, stage protests at the poultry farms, and lodge complaints with the authorities.
