SHAH ALAM, Feb 4 — Selangor FC fans have voiced their full support for Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s suggestion that Red Giants fans involved in commotions be banned from entering stadiums for the team’s matches.
Anak Selangor Fan Club president Mohd Faizal Wahid said that as Selangoreans, football fans in the state should respect the Ruler’s decrees as His Royal Highness is Selangor FC patron.
Faizal said the suggestion isn’t meant as mere punishment, and is instead to preserve the state’s good name and the future of Selangor football, reported Berita Harian.
“The Selangor Sultan’s decree clearly shows how disappointed His Royal Highness is in the commotion at the Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge, which smeared Selangor’s good name.
“This issue fuelled heated discussions on social media and drew much condemnation, affecting the team and Selangoreans’ dignity,” he added in response to Sultan Sharafuddin’s statement posted by the Selangor Royal Office on Facebook, over an incident where Selangor FC fans set off flares on the drawbridge.
In the statement, the Ruler expressed disappointment in the “thuggery and gangsterism” that are becoming increasingly rampant among local football fans, especially Selangor FC supporters.
Faizal said he hopes the Terengganu incident is a lesson to all football supporters, not just Selangor FC fans.
“Fans deserve to enjoy matches in a peaceful and sporting setting without commotions that could affect the team and state’s image,” Faizal added.
