SHAH ALAM, Jan 28 — LRT and MRT stations are due to get more parking bays to improve accessibility and encourage commuters to switch from private vehicles to public transport, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Responding to a question from Fong Kui Lun (Harapan-Bukit Bintang) in the Dewan Rakyat, Loke said more than 9,500 Park N’ Ride bays are currently available at selected LRT stations, especially along the Kelana Jaya Line and the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line.
The bays are managed by Prasarana Integrated Development Sdn Bhd (PRIDE).
“Additionally, 2,300 new Park N’ Ride parking bays will be opened at certain stations along the Shah Alam Line in 2026.
“This would allow passengers to park their vehicles and continue their journey by train into the city centre, thereby helping reduce traffic congestion in affected areas,” he said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday.
The Shah Alam Line, also known as LRT3, was initially scheduled to start operating on December 31, but was delayed due to unresolved system stability and software issues detected during the testing and commissioning phase.
Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has not provided a new launch date.
Meanwhile, Loke said over 8,700 parking bays are available along the MRT Kajang and Putrajaya Lines, with MRT Corp planning to add another 500 bays at five stations along the Putrajaya Line.
He added that the government would continue improving facilities at public transport stations to users’ ease of access and convenience.
