SHAH ALAM, August 10 — The state government has been urged to establish a Selangor Public Transport Corporation to help achieve the 60 per cent public transport usage target under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) by 2030.
Bukit Gasing state assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran said achieving the target will require a dedicated agency responsible to plan and expand Selangor’s public transport network, including buses, demand-responsive transit (DRT), and additional MRT and LRT services.
“If we want 60 percent of Selangor residents to use public transport, we need a service that is much wider than what we have now.
"The proposed corporation could work with the federal government to secure sufficient funding for public transport infrastructure, while also exploring investment opportunities with institutions such as the Asian Development Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank," he said during the debate on Selangor Second Plan (RS-2) at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
Previously, when tabling RS-2 on Friday (August 7), Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said that Selangor aims to increase public transport usage from 40 per cent to 60 per cent by 2030.
On the Subang Airport regeneration plan, Rajiv welcomed the proposal but called for more frequent flights, saying the current frequency of one jet flight per hour is insufficient to attract airlines to move operations from KLIA.
"The existing Subang SkyPark terminal is too small to accommodate sufficient gates for expanded operations, while the existing rail connection to the airport should be revived.
"The airport’s rail station should be reactivated and the nearby car park can be developed as part of the proposed transport hub,” he said.
Separately, the Pakatan Harapan lawmaker proposed that the state government consider taking over the maintenance of flats where joint management bodies and management corporations are unable to manage them effectively.
"There are about 500 low-cost strata schemes without proper management. I suggest that a Selangor state-owned subsidiary be appointed to take over their maintenance,” Rajiv said.
He recommended that the appointed subsidiary be given a maintenance key performance indicator benchmarked against the standards achieved by Singapore’s Housing and Development Board so that residents could enjoy a more dignified and comfortable living environment.
